From looking in catalogs, I have concluded that for my 22' boat, the 13E Danforth anchor with a 3/8" anchor rope and a 1/4" chain would be appropriate for my boat. Originally I had read somewhere (maybe on YouTube} about the chain length should equal the boat length, so I had 22' of chain. Further research I discovered that 4' should be enough. For some reason which I can't figure out, I went and bought 3/16" chain (maybe it was in the wrong bin and I was not paying attention).
Because of the cabin and the very small ledge beside the cabin, it is not very convenient to go the bow to drop the anchor. So I decided to go shopping for an anchor winch.
At the moment, it appears that the "Minn-Kota Deckhand 40" would do the job except for a few concern. The davit on the DH-40 is not long enough for my anchor. I am considering replacing the davit with one better suited for my anchor. Next, I am concern about the 0.2 dia. nylon braided rope. It says it has 800lb test capacity ( is this the ultimate stress or working load?). Is this sufficient for my boat? For the moment, I am not planning on anchoring in any big lakes.
I have anchors on a small lake with sandy bottom, were it held fine until we got a bad storm with strong winds, then my anchor did not hold. (luckily it just blew my boat to shore and beached it) but this was due to the swaying of my boat from side to side, which could have been prevented by adding a rear anchor, or someone else suggested 2 anchors in front in a V formation.
I would like your opinion on my choice of anchor and winch. Should I be looking for a bigger winch or a different anchor?
