Have a 4.3 Volvo-Penta...carb....190 HP....192 Rinker Bowrider...14.15 X 19 prop..stock. Are there any simple mods to boost performance and HP.....I mean as simple as a high flow Air Filter? Or are there any reasonable engine mods to boost HP?

with a 4.3............your best bet to increase your performance and fuel efficiency......is to leave any girls that dont look great in a bikini on the shore

It takes massive horsepower and torque to notice it in a boat. 50mph gps if flying in that rig. If you need more power to pull tubes and skiers step down 2 props, more speed , dont think it will happen. cheaply.

You might try a stern jack an/or a two speed or shifting propeller.
If you look very closely at the prop, it's a two speed.

2 bbl or 4? What are you trying to accomplish? You might get awy with just a prop change.

design of a hull dictates maximum speed once you hit it you can pour on the power and gain very very little,so unless your under powered your throwing money away.

If you have a 2brl carb put a 4 on it. gains est. 15hp but more efficient at speed below opening up the secondaries Cruising just on plane. Also do you have trim tabs? They can help to an extent too on popular hull designs. Not a barge! lol

Any gains you get would cost a small fortune. To pick up a couple of mph go with a 21pitch prop, BUT, you will lose acceleration and be slower to get on plane. Besides, running that fast only burns up a lot of fuel and REALLY wears out your motor quick.

Kinda spooky that everyone wants to go faster than 50... We had a bass boat when I was a kid that did 55 via the wish-o-meter.. We thought we was flying..

Here is a suggestion.. I saw a picklefork on E Bay the other day.. Jet drive, 502 blown/w NOS for 19k.. On the days you wanta be annoying run that.. On the days you want ski, tube and cruise run your 4.3...

This is only true of displacement hulls. Planing hulls gain speed linearly with the square of HP applied, there's no physical limit dictated by the hull shape (but obvious safety and structural limits). If he's reaching 47 MPH with 190 HP, he'll be able to reach 66 MPH by doubling the HP to 380, and 94 MPH by quadrupling the HP to 760. An increase of 20 HP will yield an addition 2.4 MPH.

Re: Best bang for the buck

I had that same engine in my 19 ft 2001 Larson bowrider. If I had kept the boat, I would have put a 4 brl carb, trim tabs, and a higher pitch SS prop.

Stock, I could hit right at 50 MPH per GPS with a light load. If I did the mods, not only would that increase the top speed by a couple of MPH, (53 MPH compared to 50 MPH is a noticeable difference), it would have had more low end tq, and probably a slightly more efficient cruise.

The SS prop would have been for cruising days, then the lower pitch Al. prop for wakeboarding/tubing.

There are a lot of people who say "get a 900 hp race boat if you want to go fast". I don't know why there are so many people opposed to increasing the hp slightly with what you have. The 4.3 is a fantastic engine. As long as you understand that making these changes is going to cost quite a bit of money, and is only going to give you a few MPH top end. But if you need to cover some ground and cruise at 40 MPH, with the above mods, you will do so more efficiently.

I see nothing wrong with it at all. It's your boat, and your money. I personally modify everything I own. I'm getting ready to purchase a boat with a 260 hp Merc. I already know what I need to do to get 300 hp out of it.

Just my opinion,
Steve

You don't have an air filter.......

You could remove the 4 blade prop and replace with a stainless steel 3 blade of the "right" pitch. I.E. one that will give you right at the top rated WOT RPM..... 4800 etc.....

That will give you a little more top speed. It may not launch as good as with the 4 blade though. 4 blade props usually kill your top end a couple'a MPH.

Other than that, pull the V-6 and install a V-8.

I would take better "launch" over top speed any day!!
