I'm not to keen on drilling anymore holes than necessary on the stern of the boat. I have found a few companies that make high power LEDs. http://www.http://www.ebay.com/itm/B...item3ab81117c9
drain plug lights seems to be a a reputable and has an 8000 lum single lights

or would you recommend transom mount underwater lights

any experiences with these?

The drain plug is not the best location for underwater lights. If you properly seal, the installation should not be an issue using one where you drill a hole for the wires.

I use this one and its mounted right under my swim step so it illuminates the area right where my ladder is:

Not cheap but it is a fantastic light

If you actually prefer the drain plug route, I'd find one of the better ones that is brass. And, of course, remember that your lower unit is right in front of it, so it needs a nice wide spread of light to look decent.
