Need some advice. I need a lightweight aluminum boat that I can portage past a few sets of rapids north of Kapuskasing. I don't want to sacrifice hull depth too much as the river can get a little rough yet if it weighs to much for 3 people to lug past the rapids - we will never use it. Also if the hull is too thin e.g. .50 mill is that a problem? Motor would be a 9.9. Thanks for well thought out replies.

I think you'll only do that once. With a 9.9 and fuel, you're talking about a tough load for three people, no matter how light the boat might be.

Yes seems like it but it is being done up here regularly by hunters, fishers and trappers smaller than I am. Then there are the kayaks - they weigh far more than a boat or canoe per person and they each have to carry their own. If you want fish you have to get to where they are.

Can you look at what the other people are carrying??? I don't think 3 good size men could carry my 14' more than a few feet.

The other guys have old aluminum boats so it is impossible to figure what they weigh. Today's 14 ft boats range from 130 lbs for a .50 mill and not too deep to 210 lbs for a V15 Tracker to 350-480 lbs for a 100 mill thickness and a few extra seats and/or a console etc.
