Hello all,
It's been a while since my last post, thanks in advance for any help. First off
1987 5.7 liter OMC Cobra strendrive in a Four Winns 267 Quest.
I had struck an underwater obstacle and had immediate problems with forward gear engagement. I adjusted the lower shift cable just to get me back to shore. Trailered the boat, put on muffs and had a noisy lower leg. Disassembled, found a piece of metal that looked like a part of a shim in the housing. I had a local "mechanic" look at my foward gear and clutch dog and he said they where bad because they had lost their "edge", ie slightly rounded at contact points on inner part of foward gear and likewise for the clutch dog. After consulting the diagram for the gear set assembly in the manual I cannot determine where the shim came from. The only ones I see were all intact on the vertical shaft when I disassembled. Anyway, what is your collective opinion on the state of my gears and if I do need to replace the gears what are the best ones for the money. Also should I just get the forward and clutch dog or the whole set. I will also be replacing the lower shift cable just to be sure. Thanks again, Mike
