Re: best place to ground.

The negative battery cable from the start battery is connected to the engine block so that point or the negative terminal of the battery are the best ground points. The starter may be turning slow because 1) the battery is not fully charged 2) the battery cables are corroded (remove both ends and clean or replace them if necessary), 3) the battery does not have high enough cranking amps (too small for the job) 4) the battery has a bad cell (have it load tested), 5) the starter itself is in need of repair (rebuild it if necessary) or 6) the engine/drive has an issue that causes it turn hard.

Re: best place to ground.

I have no idea how your batteries are wired. Are they both used for starting or is one used for a trolling motor, do you have a battery switch? If you don't have a battery switch and the engine is not charging the second battery there is no need to have the two batteries grounded together. My point about the slow turning starter has nothing to do with where the other stuff is grounded. The starter is bolted to the engine block so the entire engine block is ground. The starter needs power to work. No power = no work. Bad cables = no work. Bad connections = no work. Bad battery = no work. Weak battery = no work. Too small a battery = no work. Bad starter = no work. Check the cheap and easy stuff first.

Re: best place to ground.

I have two batteries and a swtich. No trolling motor. The starter is good. I had the engine on a stand before and it would start fine. The OD is not attached. I am getting a weak crank and the battery is brand new. The cables are all new too....So I was assuming it was the ground.... I have both of them going to the belhousing but today I will attach them to each other and send on to the block. And see what happens...

You should connect a meter at the battery and check the voltage drop when cranking it should stay above about 10.9 volts

Then you can connect it at the + on the starter and see if it drops more

IF your getting a bigger drop at the starter it would point to poor battery cables

If the negative terminal of each battery is connected to the engine block or the bellhousing, that's fine. If you have two batteries, set the switch to BOTH and try it. If the engine now spins freely, you have a lack of power from the battery you were using. Yes -- new batteries go bad and it may not be fully charged when installed.
