best plugs for 90 hp inline 6 merc?

Manual says champion L76V or NGK BUHW plugs, but cautions that mfg may recommend others today due to changes in fuel since motor made. Motor is 1980 vintage, good compression and seems to run fine on the L76V. Does anyone know if a different plug is reccomended today and why? Ive heard that the NGK is superior to the champions, should I switch? Dealer is no help, merc website no help, anyone?
