The biggest problem is the tools required. Every step requires a special tool that you won't have. Maybe someone on here knows some neat tricks but I can't see how you would set up gear backlash or even get it apart without the special tools. If all you want to do is change the water pump you won't even need a manual. I can't think of much else that you could do in there beyond that.

I agree with Bondo...the Mercruiser factory manuals are best. I bought old ones on eBay, new ones are still available too. I have found a few critical errors in Clymer that got me interested in spendign a little more and getting the real thing.

Re: Best Pre-Alpha Outdrive Repair Manual

Airman, I disassembled a 1977 MerCruiser outdrive without special tools. I did however run into a problem getting the lower unit apart because of the big nut (behind the prop)that holds it together but I plan on taking a reciprocating saw and cutting it out and replacing with a new one when I rebuild the unit. With a little determination one can do this without the special tools. I also have a dial indicator for setting any backlash, etc, just I need to know the specs. As the saying goes, and you being a navy petty officer, "adapt, overcome". I have the pics to show if anyone cares to see.
