Best Prop for my bass boat

I have a bass tracker pro crappie 175 with a 2015 20 HP mercury motor. The boat is used mainly in restricted HP lakes. The motor has a 10P alum. prop. Recommended rpm for this motor is 5400 to 6100 rpm. I am getting 5000 to 5100 rpm. Top speed is 14 mph based on GPS. The trim is set at the next to last hole. I also installed a Hydro foil SE200 on the motor which seems to help some to get stern up. How can I improve performance and speed to go faster and also get to the recommended factory rpm. The hydro foil while increasing stern lift it is also increasing drag. Out side of getting another motor, I would remove the foil and ask to try a 9 pitch 3-blade. A 8 pitch should get you into the higher side of your upper range, but don't think you would gain much. The 9 should get you into the low side of your 5400 to 5600 range

I'm a guy who likes the foils but only if you have enough power to use them from the start

Couldn't find a Pro Crappie A pro guide is about 1300 lbs and rated for 90 hp.If its rated for 40 your at 1/2 power.
Check that the throttle opens all the away.Don't assume because its new that it is set up right.

With your struggle I get a high slip 37% If we go to a 8" prop I figure about 5700 should improve the slip
Boat should plane.If we are lucky maybe 17 mph.Youll need to take off the foil.Don't worry about the holes.
Weight placement and elimination could be critical.Too much weight in the stern would be nearly impossible to plane.
Is the anti vent plate(just above the prop) about even with the bottom?Looks like the motor is too low though at that speed it is squatting.
Smart tabs carefully applied may help.Adjust only just enough to get it to plane.

steelespike. alldodge - The boat weighs about 900 lbs. Seems like 8" prop is the way to go. The hydro foil is clamped on so I will not have any holes. The stern has 3 batteries and a 17 gal. tank. I keep the tank 1/2 full all the time. I am planning on emptying the gas tank and using a remote 6 gallon tank. That would make much less weight. The motor does not use much fuel. With 6 gallons I will be able to keep fresh gas in motor most of the time. With two people I am getting 12 mph and with 1 person it is 14mph. I need an extra prop so I might as well get the 8" one to try. The fin type plate above the prop , I guess anti-vent plate, is even with the bottom of the boat. I thought the hydro foil would bring the boat out of the squatting position. Guess not. I hope the 8" pitch will bring the bow down so the boat is not squatting.

Oh. Forgot. Do you think a 4 bladed prop would help? When I bought the boat the owner had a 9.9 HP mercury pro kicker with a 4 bladed prop. I never used that motor. I traded it for a 20HP because where I mainly fish it is restricted HP. The owner said he could get the boat on plane with the 4 bladed prop. Think this is true or not?

A 4 blade should help it get up on plane.Maybe you could try a Merc Spitfire.
They are said to do all the good things without the loss of top end.
The 4 blade would probably have better slip numbers.
Sure would be nice if you could move one or more of the batteries forward even if only to where you sit.
If you had a quick connect you could just move one or two forward for traveling.
Would be nice to see a lightly loaded test run with 2 of the batteries removed,Empty live well,no anchor etc.

Too much fishing stuff on deck + highly underpowered OB. If fin does not ride parallel to water level when combo is on plane will achieve excessive tail drag and slow combo down. Definitely need less pitch to better hole shot along compensating deck weight.

The 4 blade will increase lift but also takes more HP to turn it. Each blade in the water creates drag as well as transferring power from the engine to the water. A 4 blade 8 pitch might be the same as a 3 blade 9 pitch. Be nice if you could find a place to let you try out some

Unfortunately I have alot of experience with underpowered boats.

I've found you want a prop with little rake and the biggest blades possible.

After watching the video I'm convinced your not on plane. You can help your situation by having the motor fully trimmed down. You might be able to trim down further by removing the limiting shaft.

You will pick up rpm once the hull gets on step.

To get to that speed your gonna have to balance the hull better by moving all your battery's way forward. If that's not enough to get on plane drop one tooth of pitch.

Before you buy any props measure between the center line of the propshaft and ventilation plate. Some aftermarket prop manufacturers offer larger diameter props then OE.

I'd also like to know where your ventilation plate is in relation to the bottom of your hull. You can use a yard stick for this.

I scanned all the replies and you got a lot of good, accurate info. Problem is you are under powered............... period. All the wishing in the world won't solve it. You want you cake and eat it too.....you want speed and pushing power simultaneously and under powered you won't get either. But you can cut the pitch of your prop, as suggested above, and help your engine survive and run better and cleaner in the process.....but don't expect any increase in speed....decrease is what you will get in your situation.

My rule of thumb and others have agreed in non related separate postings is that 2 strokers need to spin up. Horsepower is (torque x rpm) / 5252. If you are shy on cubes as are a lot of 2 strokers you don't have adequate torque.....cubes make torque....check the big rail dragsters....big block v8s....lots of cubes, lots of torque. Small blocks can't stay up with them....Hot Rod Magazine. Another problem with 2 strokers and lack of torque is the fuel scavenging process. Half way through the power stroke you open up the exhaust ports and let out all your, what's left of, your combustion whereas an under square 4 stroker will burn down the full length and just keep pulling and do it with much lower rpms.

Merc flaunted 99 cubic inches back when they boasted 1 hp/cu in in the Merc 1000 and continued with that sized block up through the 150 tower (Inline 6). It had to run up the rpms to get it's hp since it didn't have the cubes. The V 150 comes out and is a 2 liter at first. Couldn't get the big bass boats with their 3 batteries, 50 gallons of gas, pair of 50 gallon live wells, 100# of tackle 2 big butted fisherman, 500# of engine and 2000# of boat out of the hole (on plane) in a reasonable length of time. So what did Merc do? It came up with a hot dog 150 and guess what.....it had 2.5 liters of displacement. Did make a difference.

Back in the '50's OMC had a lowly 25 hp that ran at a leisurely 4500 rpm but as I recall had 35 cu in of displacement. You could put a 16' plywood boat in front of that with a couple of fishermen, 12 gal of gas, one battery, a livewell, some tackle and run across the bay at a 20-25 mph clip. It had the cubes, didn't need the rpms. Course the rest of the story was that those plywood boats were light and had a very slight semi V. Most of the hull was almost flat which made for a nice, easy, planing hull; beat you to death in a chop, but planed nicely with low hp engines which is all we had back then. Back then you never saw a tach so nobody knew whether they were propped properly or not.....just ran what came with the engine when new.

So sir, get your 8 pitch and be satisfied with it or get you at least 75% of your BIA hp rating engine hp and be on your way with speed and great hole shot.

Need to go at least 2 down in pitch fron current prop pitch, that will surely add + 1 K wot rpm to be at 6 K, will have better hole shot with slight less top speed. Check if lightly loaded OB runs around 6 K, if over revs slightly throttle less, as soon you add more weight rpm will drop accordingly.

Trim OB to be perpendicular to water level when combo is on plane, balance combo well and that's it.
