i just bought a 2006 tahoe 195 deck boat with 4.3. what is the best or top rpm for this motor. have had it to around 3300 rpm. run 44-45 at this rpm. i think it will do more but don't want to push it.

Re: best rpm

At WOT (wide Open Throttle) you should be getting 4400-4800rpm

Re: best rpm

You safely have another 1000 RPM. BUT, you do NOT want to keep it at that RPM for extended periods.

Why not???? I regularly run in the 4000+ range for extended periods and have never had a problem....

If fact I once ran 14 miles (nautical ones, not those short land ones) at WOT. It was great fun!!! :D:D:D

for short bursts wot is fine but for longevity/mileage try to keep the rpms in the crusing range. Mine is 2500-3500rpm yours sould be simular.

Great numbers. 3000 is about cruising for that boat and motor. With what gas costs now if you could live with less rpm the better.

Good luck! Welcome aboard.

Re: best rpm

You won't know if it is over-propped unless you see if it can hit the top rpm range. I would not be afraid to take it up to 4500+ rpm depending on water conditions of course.

Running over-propped at lower rpm while cruising (40+mph) can be harder on an engine than running above 4000 rpm at the same speed correctly propped.

The manual on my boat says the optimum cruising rpm is 500 below the top rpm the engine can reach within the specified range. That would be 4000-4100rpm on any given day. I leave it at 4000 rpm and don't even think about it if we need to boogie across the lake.

Your numbers indicate a 26 pitch is on there assuming the rpm and speed as posted is accurate and with an approximated 1.7 drive ratio. That is pretty steep, just my opinion. Once you start pulling skiers or tubes or wakeboards you may need a different prop. If you never do that then you are probably set.
