for corrosion (suface oxidation), muratic (sp?) acid, carefully applied and rinsed does a fine job. Don't let it set on there, use rubber gloves and soak a rag to wipe where you want and rinse quickly.
For polish, the greatest stuff I've used is called "BEST" for metal polishing...work it the same as you would wax your car.....mirror finish.
If it's just grime from exposure to the elements, just use the polish...

I just go flats fishing. When I get home its nice and shiny again and I spray it with Pennzguard. The one with Rustoleum in it.

I found an awesome metal polish /cleaner product. Use it on my motorcycle and boat.
its called MAAS. I've tried many different ones since my bike has alum and lots of chrome. 100 X's better than Mothers.
http://www.maasinc.com/products_metalpolish.html
a little pricey but well worth it. Has many applications for the home also.
Bought some crash bars off of ebay. Nice surface rust and age. Took my dremel tool and MAAS. Amazing. Then I tried some mothers on another section not even close in results.

You can get polishing compounds made for stainless steel (I believe sears sells them) and use a dremel and wheel. It will look like a mirror!

You can even use very fine emery cloth with a little iol as a lubricant and wet sand it with same results.

Bob

The best way I know to clean them up is to take them out and run them. The silt in the water does a pretty good job of cleaning them up after a good day steaming around. If they are really bad just put yourself into a little bit of shallow water for a couple of minutes, it'll come up looking like brand new. Ask me how I know .....
