best way to remove rear anchor pin

One the very few thing never touched during the rebuild was the rare anchor pins on the gimbals. I just had to remove one of my rams which siezed. The threads om the rear pin are shot - I had to cut the nuts off as they were just spinning.

The pin does not want to budge. I soaked it with liquid wrench and and tapped it with a hammer and she didn't move.

Is there a trick (like heating) to getting the pin out? Should I just recut the threads smaller and leave the pin as is? I'm afarid if I agressively hit the pin I could crack the housing.

Suggestions?

WHOA RALPH, what years your boat, You know the drill MAKE, year and horsepower. If its a merc (early-mid 70s)with anchor pins ,have you removed the NAILS that hold the pin in place? If so I used a threaded slidhammer to pop them out.

Oops sorry. It's a 79 Formula with twin 350s and pre-alphas. I couldn't see any nails it looks like the front anchor - just slid into place through th gimbal ring. The threads are shot - wore greatly in some spots.

Threads are actually in the gimbell housing not the ring. but the screws may be stuck in the ring not the threads try heating both.

Re: best way to remove rear anchor pin

its just the rear anchor pin on the port side that holds the back of the rams - the threads are shot. there is enough meat there to rethread them so I can put the rams back on.

So the ring itself is threded on both sides for the pin? What do you do thread one side and then slide the pin over the thread it into the other side?

Here are some before and after pic:
I must have misunderstood You MEAN the rearpin that connects the trim cylinders to the drive...m I thought you meant the screws on the transom assembly screws. Take a sawzall or cutting wheel and cut it off. buy a new pin and nuts.Motors look sweet!!!! :D

No Problem. I appreciate the help. Out comes the sawzall :D

I need your advice on my interrupts - When I rebuilt I bypassed them. Shifting is ok. Should I hook them back up?

Alpha , MR , r ,all had shift interrupt. Why did you unhook them? Id hate to tell you to hook them up and start having problems. Have you replaced the lower shift cables? Probably needs it by now.

Re: best way to remove rear anchor pin

I completely gutted the boat - totally. The only things I did not replace are the transom plates, bell housing and rams (hence the ram replacement now)

I put in all new cables but used the original shift plates. I confered with a high perf marine mech and he advised that given the low idle that the interrupts would only cause problems.

During the gutting one of the switches broke so it was an easy choice. Now I am starting to second guess... Just wanted to hear what your experience has been. Thanks.

Low idleing engines do shift easier, and if you have Gaffrig style shifters that helps. If it were me Id hook them back up but if its shifting OK its your call.

Re: best way to remove rear anchor pin

I cut the achor pin in two places between the gimble ring so that I am only trying to get one side out at a time.

I've sprayed it for several days with liquid wrench.

I've whacked it with a heavy framing hammer.

Neither side of the pin is moving.

Any suggestions?

My next thought was to heat it up with a torch and try whacking it out.

Then I though I might have to start drilling it out. Just the thought of having to drill through 5/8th SS has me ill.

Finally comes the prospect of having to replace the whole gimabl ring....

Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly apprecited as this has me dry docked

Heat will loosen corrosion. Can you post a pic of exactly what pin your talking about.? Im not sure were talking about the same pin.

The anchor pin that goes right though the ears on the bottom of a gimbal ring like the one shown above. Note the one above does not have the pin installed.

In my case, the pin is 3/8th X 5/8th X 10-1/2 inches. It holds the front of the trim rams (the end that has the fittings for the hydrolic lines)

I cut the middle section of the pin out so that I only needed to get on side of the pin out at time.

Re: best way to remove rear anchor pin

PB Blaster, Heat, Hammer/punch. repeat as necessary. Had almost the same problem with the tilt axle on my outboard. After a few rounds of the above prescription, she broke loose. An air hammer turned down low may help. It's repetetive pecking seemed to help mine a bit. A handheld sledge worked well too :D

Be careful when you put in the new pin. The threads are a bit softer than you would expect. The previous owner of my boat cross-threaded both ends of mine and I actually broke the end off the shaft trying to get the nuts off.

Heat did nothing :(

I finally got it out using a ball joint press. Worked like a charm.

The crack of it breaking loose was impressive :D I thought the gimbal ring snapped or something!

Thanks for the help guys. It's much appreciated.

Re: best way to remove rear anchor pin

The shift interrupt switch is also needed to shift out of gear. I disconnected mine once for troubleshooting (Alpha1) and I almost ran into the pier while docking. I pulled the shifter into neutral, but the boat kept on going. I quickly killed the engine, restarted and shifted into reverse before I hit. The load has to be removed from the dog clutch teeth for them to separate. I have a 16X16 prop, which keeps more of a load on the drive at idle than most props.
