Im messing with a 50hp johnson I went to start it with a set of jumper cables. I hooked the battery side pos to pos, and neg to neg. I than grounded the neg to the powerhead and touched the pos to the little nipple on the starter. the starter began to spin but in the wrong direction. I instantly thought that I got the polarity's wrong. So I switched the cables grounded the pos to the powerhead and touched the neg to the nipple. To my surprise the same thing happened it Spun in the wrong direction. No matter which way I hooked the cables up the starter would spin in reverse as if it was disengaging. Now I am baffled beyond reason.:confused:

A "Prestolite" starter?

What do you mean when you say the wrong direction?? The bendix only lifts if the starter spins the opposite direction of the bendix. When your starter turns which way does it spin Clockwise? Now when you hand turn the bendix which way does it turn to raise the gear to align with the ring gear? counterclockwise?

Has somebody had the starter apart prior to this prob? Need more history. Did the bendix engage the flywheel ?

Dew2, Boobie..... I've been waiting for "Lostfisher" to get back to us but I've got other things to do sooooooo........

If a Prestolite starter, and the starter is actually turning in a Clockwise direction (backwards), someone has installed the brushes incorrectly.

If a Bosch starter, and you're bench testing it (off the engine), I assume that you're confused and that the starter is actually turning properly in a Counter Clockwise direction.

Starter needs to spin so it turns flywheel clockwise.
If it is truely running backwards someone may have rotated the brush end cover 180 degrees.

Joe, that's why I asked if somebody had the starter apart and put it back together wrong.

It does not engage the flywheel. It spins counter clockwise no matter what. If i turn the starter gear in the clockwise direction by hand it starts to ride up the bendix. But when I hook the cables up to it pos or negative it spins counter clockwise. The guy said it worked just fine last year.

Standing over top of the starter, looking directly down at the bendix drive, Counter Clockwise is the proper direction for the starter to turn.

well the confusion was on my end. joe i could not find a name on the starter. the bendix is spinning in the right direction (counter ckockwise) but the starting gear does not ride up the bendix. Now i just feel stupid cuz i was in a hurry.lol

When you switched the cables around, you SURELY fried the rectifier=NO battery charge.

"messing around" has a price!

If the bendix doesnt climb you may have bad connections and with a 12 V system the ground is most important,Clean em all GOOD.the battery could be low on power, charge it.After these try it.Next step would be if its still not engauging the flywheel, have the starter checked it could be bad.

I jumped the cables directly to the starter.

Make sure you have a fully charged battery.
Give the bendix shaft a shot of lite oil & work it
up & down by hand.
Sometimes a dry bendix won't jump up?
