1. In a settlement between Sears and customers with improperly done wheel balancing, lawyers got $2.45 million, and customers got $2.50 a tire. (St. Louis Post-Dispatch, June 4)

2. In a $3.7 million settlement between televangelist Jim Bakker's Praise The Lord Ministries and 165,000 defrauded Christians, lawyers got $2.5 million, and each victim got $6.54. (The Citizen-Times, Asheville, North Carolina, July 30)

3. In a Settlement of price-fixing charges against cosmetics manufacturers and retailers, lawyers got $24 million, and each customer got a free cosmetic. (San Francisco Chronicle, July 19)

Thats one reason I've never sued, don't seem worth it to me..

Re: Betcha Didn't know...

Here's another good one.
I have a life insurance policy & just got notice of a class-action suit against the company. Apparently some folks were charged a premium for a period of time before their policy became effective (like maybe a couple days). The proposed settlement:
Affected policy holders get a supplemental death benefit of about $3,000 if they die within the next 18 months. The lawyers get "not less than" $5 million.

Most of the state tobacco settlement awards were dumped into the states general fund. Not into health, medical or preventive education like was agreed on. go figure..... The lawyers got millons.

I guess what this boils down to is that:

A) We seriously need Tort Reform.

------------OR--------------

B) We should all think about becoming lawyers.

Seriously, if there was ever an example of parasites, in our society, they are it.

Dictionary definition of a parasite:
"An organism that grows, feeds, and is sheltered on or in a different organism while contributing nothing to the survival of its host."

Just got a payment of $4100 from a REIT that went sour about 10 years ago - took a long time coming, but got most of my losses back!

Re: Betcha Didn't know...

I just recieved a settlement of 21 cents from some class action lawsuit. It cost more to send it to me than it was worth. What a joke.

Ken

Re: Betcha Didn't know...

Did I know that? No
Am I surprised? No

I'm an accountant, and the company I work for is currently being sued via a class action suit. Here is how it transpired:

January 2001: My company posted its financials for year ending & quarter ending 12/31/2000.

Summer 2001: We discovered an error in the Q4 2000 financials. We voluntarily told our auditors and promptly issued a "Restatement of Earnings" for the effected period.

Shortly thereafter 2001: A lawfirm posted a press release and sent letters to all shareholders that if they wanted to be included in a class action lawsuit to get in touch with the lawfirm or to sign and return the form received in the mail.

Currently: Lawsuit is still costing my company thousands a month, without any resolution yet.

As both a shareholder and an accountant for the company (knowing exactly what happened), I received the letter to sue my own company... and basically sue myself ironically enough. Of course I elected not to sue myself but they apparently received enough signatures to pursue.

What I learned is that these sleeze ball law firms actually have software and people hired to search the internet for such key words as "Earnings Restatement" they do a little research, a couple hundred bucks for a press release etc, and before ya know it, they've got themselves some business. This is the sad reality of these law firms. Absolutely no regard whatsoever for anyone but themselves... they are literaly scavengers preying off the mistakes and misfortunes of others.

Re: Betcha Didn't know...

the worst part is the lawyers that sometimes elderly widows need to sue the state to get their husbands pensions etc kept in force for them, and lawyers take their third of the last money these widows get
Dog eat dog world really applies to lawyers, but I guess its better than nothing at all - probably some scumball lawyer keeping the funds from the widow in the first place
