I wanted to know if you can use 1708 biaxial with mat to put on the skin between new transom ? I wanted to beef up it a little . Which way would you face the mat side of the 1708 when installed like this ? out or in to the wood side ? I am using epoxy ! Thanks JJB

Re: Between the transom and its skin !

I would only laminate the new transom core to the outer skin with either 1.5 oz mat or thickened resin mixture (resin/cabosil/milled fibers). But you can surely beef up the skin before installing the new core with some 1708. You need to laminate with the mat side down.

To avoid the eventual print-thru of the 1708 pattern on the outside transom skin (the finished gelcoat), put a layer 1.5 oz mat down first, then the 1708. Besides this will add some more beef.

Re: Between the transom and its skin !

Consider this. Virtually zero boat mfgs use a layer of wet cloth between the transom core and hull during new construction. The hull is already cured when the core goes in and all they do is wet (straight or thickened) both contact surfaces and clamp. If you want to do it fine but it isn't necessary and you are more likely to get massive air pockets when setting the new core onto a sandwiched layer of wet glass. The only way to avoid air pockets is to vaccum bag the job. Regardless, wood should always be faced with mat for best adhesion....BUT and its a BIG BUT...you are using epoxy and a poorly done epoxy job is better or equal to a great polyester job.
