"Yee-haw! There's flyin' fish everywhere!" <br /><br />Says Danny Brown, who caught a big one the first week in July on the Missouri River. About 10 big ones. <br /><br />That wasn't his goal, but these fish are accommodating _ and dangerous. Brown, a biologist with the Missouri Department of Conservation, was cruising through Missouri River backwaters when the fish _ silver carp _ began jumping out of the water and into his boat. They fly 6 feet, sometimes 8 feet high, and have been known to hurt people.<br /><br />Here's another article on it.<br /><br /> When Fish Strike Back

I wonder if they jump when they're on the hook. This sounds like a lot of fun. And up to 30 lb. I think I'd better go fishing.

Re: Beware of Flying Fish

I haven't had a carp jump into my boat but a big shad jumped onto the back deck of my boat. I took off out of the ramp early morning last week and I just happen to see something out of the corner of my eye so I turned around and look and there was a full size shad flopping on the deck. My partner and I had a good laugh and both agreed that was the strangest thing that ever happened to either one of us while fishing.<br />On related note, have anyone ever heard of minow turn into carp when they get big? A guy told me this once and I was just wondering if there are any truth to it.

Re: Beware of Flying Fish

I have a funny story to tell.<br /><br />Many years ago when I was heavily involved in the local Bass Club, the night of the meeting, a good friend walked in with the biggest black eye Ive ever seen. Of course everyone wanted to know what happened so he stood up in the front and told this story.<br /><br />"Well, it was about 5:30 AM, and I was screaming accross the lake at about 60 MPH when about a 14" rainbow trout jumped in front of me and hit the trolling motor, it then proceded to hit me in the face knocking my glasses into the lake, then it just flew out of the boat. Guess you could say I was Trout slapped". :D :D

Re: Beware of Flying Fish

These invasive species of fish are very dangerous to those of us who love the sport of fishing, not only physicaly, but even more so to the sport itself. These flying carp just may "take over" the waters they are in and reduce the fish population to only themselves and other problem fish. Hey, this really worrys me!! I dont want our fisheries ruined!!

Wow, 25mph. 30lb. flying carp. Sounds like the fish are getting even with the fishermen.

Re: Beware of Flying Fish

they are a problem and and they are not catchable using the ole standard methods. I keep hearing they are suppose to be very good eathing but.... I know on the missouri here they are thick, thick, thick the local conservation agent said you have to watch them while you are on plane or idling something about the vibration of the prope in the water. They are going to cause a lot of problems to a lot areas if we don't figure out a way to control them. Lets hope they don't make it to the great lakes

Re: Beware of Flying Fish

i was fishing out of a gheenoe in the swamp late late one night and was sitting there tying a hook with a 12v light on a little pedestal on the middle seat. a 2#+ jackfish jumped in the opposite end and scared the **** outta me! i couldn't see past the glare of the light, so i was stuck in the fight/flight mode until my heart started beating again :)

Re: Beware of Flying Fish

They are not only in the Missouri River they are moving into every tributary that has adequate water flow... Kansas River, Osage, Blue, <br /><br />A kid cought a 25+ pounder below the Smithville Lake Dam last summer... This is 30 miles from the Missouri River...

I havent cought them yet but they have hit my boat while idling in back water. It is pretty scary being so close to the water when a 20lber hits the side of the boat.
