Big Merc Lower unit problem.

My friends 1982 Merc 50 was left in northern Minnesota "VERY COLD" over the winter when he picked it up apparently there was water in the lower unit that expanded big time and I am holding the entire drive shaft and prop in my hands the lower unit is dry "empty" of course. The boat ran last fall.

So what broke? and what would a good plan of attack be. :)

Thanks inadvance.

Doesn't that make it kinda hard to type?

The ice pushed the carrier out of the lower unit, I have seen quite a few that were repaired by replaceing the prop shaft seals, carrier o/ring and nut, inspect the castings for cracks and if they are not damaged try putting it back together and see if it works

Doesn't that make it kinda hard to type? [/QB][/quote]No it came out in one peice so it was easy to handle, plus all the oil was gone so none dripped on the key board.. :)

So if I attempt to replace the prop shaft seals, carrier o/ring and nut will I need a spanner wrench or anything special....?

The shaft looks good and from what I can see the lower unit gears look okay.
