A good way to spruce up a boat that you like is to contact your local insurance companies and see if you can find a wrecked boat with a good engine package. I bought 3 this year already and sold the engine packages for repowers on older boats. If a boat is totaled you can pick up very expensive parts cheap. Good luck.

First the calulations you are doing are considering an ideal world which you will never achieve, an off the self 600cfm carb is never going to flow 600 cfm on your vehicle. 90% is an decent expectation, so yes way big is not going to help you but an small 4 barrel ie 390 cfm, 450cfm etc would be an great step in right direction, also an area that I would look at is the the rocker arms, basicly some cheap horsepower here. going to some roller rockers will help valetrain stability and longetivity, if you could get away with an 1.6 ratio rocker more free, generally G
stamped rockers are rated 1.5 but actually closer to 1.38 - 1.42 so thats an easy way to get a little extra, no you won't see head snapping high speed performance from your combo but those are an few things you can try. I installed 1.6 roller rocker on my own 2.5L 4 banger and some aftermarket valve springs along with a mild pocket porting job, boosted my little boat from 39mph to 44-45mph gps. so was worth my energy
happy boating

Assuming I get the motor and outdrive with all the mounting gear for the out drive. Which is the best bet the 4.3 V6 or the inline 6 and what gonna be the best value for the dollar. What kind of cost increase are we talking about.

ZeroCool,
Something to look at is what type of 4.3 Lt. set-up you get. Specifically, there are 4.3's with 1 piece manifolds that require a $450 "Y pipe" (Merc part number 807130a7) that my local dealer told me was no longer available. His computer screen showed the lack of availability but I thought the law required them to keep parts available for at least 7 years after the end of manufacture. I've had these one piece manifolds and believe they are responsible for the premature death of my valves via repeated ingestion of small amounts of water. The new setup I'm going with involve the following Merc part numbers that the Merc tech on the factory web site e-mailed me:
99746a17 (qty2) exhaust manifold
807988a2 (qty 2) exhaust elbow
807130a4 (qty 1) bullhorn assembly/ Y-pipe
14865a1 (qty 2) elbow assembly
Total cost retail new is about $1600 for the exhaust system alone. However, I saved quite a bit by shopping on the internet. I wish I'd thought of the insurace company angle suggested in a previous post.

CrazyRay-

This is not rocket science or astrology here, it's a simple mater of volume and RPM. I'm interested in reading more about your efficientcy comment with regard to cfm.
