I have a Mitsubishi 60". When I got mine I made sure it was viewable from all angles. Some of them tend to dissapear when you view them from the side. Some have to be viewed almost directly head on to get the best picture. Just walk around it and see if the picture stays nice and bright. This was a few years ago so they may be much better now.

Dave

65 inches for $1,500....that's gotta be a rear projection, cheap because they're rapidly becoming obsolete, but will probably work fine if you don't mind the limited angle view.

If you want a true big screen, check out an actual ceiling or tabletop projector and pull down screen combo. There's HDTV capable projectors out there these days for about $1,000 to $1,500, and they can make screen sizes up over 100 inches. Beware you have to have a separate tuner for TV (but if you have satellite you already have one), and the screen costs a couple hundred. Those projectors have made HUGE strides over the past 2 years or so in terms of brightness. But if you have a lot of windows, it might still not be very good....they're best in darker rooms.

Otherwise for standalone units, right now I feel DLP is the way to go in terms of bang for the buck. But I think you'll have to look a little smaller to get one in your price range....under 50 inches probably.

Whatever you get, make darn sure it's HDTV capable, just in case the government decides to force their "All HDTV broadcasting" rule one of these days...then we'll ALL be out buying new TVs since our analogs will suddenly not work. But then again their first deadline has come & gone already, so I doubt it'll be forced real soon.

Re: big screen tvs??

We bought a 52" hitiachi about 1 1/2 years ago. Slowly the pic turned blue. And it didnt view good from the side when it did work.

Anyway, we had the extended warranty and called Circuit City (where we bought it). The guy came out and took some things apart and said he had to order parts. It'll take 2 weeks he said. He also mentioned that whatever it was that he had to replace took 4 hours to do. And he didnt seem real anxious to do it.

2 weeks go by. They call and say the parts are on the way. To make this short after 2.5 months they could not get the parts. CC did allow us to exchange the TV for another. They even allowed us the full price, less tax, toward another.

We now have a flat screen Phillips. When we purchased the rear projection hitiachi, the flat screen stuff was about twice what it is now.

Anyway, I'd really think about an hitiachi. Parts dont seem to be available. Great pic when it works though.

Re: big screen tvs??

I work at Best Buy, and can tell you that we sell more Samsung DLP's than pretty much any other projection or flat panel LCD/Plasma. Right now the DLP's are very affordable, even in the larger 56" size. A few other options are Sony and Toshiba. Sony has a few models of a combo (projection and LCD) TV....the biggest that I have seen is 60". Toshiba in general makes some very nice LCD's and projection units. The picture quality is very even between all the them for the most part. The technology out there for TV's is mind boggling right now, but as someone else mention DLP is a great way to go

Re: big screen tvs??

I have a Sony Grand WEGA 55" lcd rear projection HDTV. Very happy with it. I paid more, just 6 months ago, than they are going for now. I found that Circuit City had the best variety and prices.

Did a LOT of research, including volumes of advice and suggestions from this forum.

Be sure that what you decide on is a digital, not analog, display, and has a built in HDTV receiver. "HD ready" means that it does not.

Good luck. :)

Re: big screen tvs??

When I was looking at rear projection tvs, I noticed a big difference in the amount of reflection a screen puts off. That's something to consider if you'll be using it in a room with a lot of windows and/or table lamps. Might be less of an issue if it's a plasma screen or LCD, but I don't know anything about those tvs.

Re: big screen tvs??

JB- thats a great TV, I am most likely going to buy that one in a few months.

Basscat- that really isnt a big issue with the lcd's or the plasmas. Its a big problem with rear projections, but the newer table top variety like JB's or the DLP's really arent too sensitive to reflective light.

Ron- make sure you go to as many places as possible for pricing etc. Even though I work at Best Buy I wont tell ya to go there just because I do.....The displayed TV's will vary from store to store. It all depends on whats in stock and what region you are in. Lots of variables too numerous to describe...........so best advice is to check out all the places and get as much info as you can and make an educated desicion based on product, services, and price.

Re: big screen tvs??

edit- that'll teach me to post before reading all the way to the bottom. You already have a tv now :D

Orginal reply-
save your money on rear projection. You'll find that having to sit directly in front of it will get old if you have a wife that likes to move your furniture a lot :D .... gotta keep finding a new favorite spot to be able to see a clear picture. :D or you can always make the rule that your favorite chair has to be positioned straight across from the tv no matter what the furniture position :D

Re: big screen tvs??

For anyone else considering a big screen, the flat panels are growing in size and shrinking in price. OLCD technology is here! It is a process of using an inkjet printer to create the LCDs on any surface that can be printed on. It costs a fraction of what regular LCD costs to manfr, the resolution is incredible!...well beyond anything we can display on it. It is possible to create OLCD displays on thin plastic sheets. Literally, you will be able to roll your display up and put it in a tube to transport it. First generation of multi-color OLCD is being used for the display on some Kodak digital cameras.

DirecTV is re-assigning sats, launching a 3rd one, to make room for more HD programming. The new dishes have either 4 or 6 LNBs (I forget). This and HD-DVD is where your HD programming will be coming from. I don’t see broadcast TV competing with either of those, so I’m not sure of the value of an HD TV with built in tuner. Besides, the sat tuners also decode broadcast HD signals...at least mine does.

Re: big screen tvs??

Don't care what ya do, but digital HDTV will be the standard in a few years, or sooner. Means anything you now get off an antenna will be no more...get the very latest tech, which will be obsolete in 2 years anyway. Get a rich friend, and just buy their hand me down if you want to save money.
