Greetings everybody,

I am upgrading my boat's sound system by adding a self powered sub, 1 amp powering 6 interior speakers, and 1 amp powering 4 tower speakers. My question is this: can I expect to run my entire sound system (head unit, eq, powered sub, amp1, and amp2) off of ONE deep cycle battery for at least 6 hours without the alternator charging the battery? If yes, what specific battery would you recommend? If no, what do I need to do in order to power such a system without compromising my cranking battery?

EQ: http://www.***********/meq15bt.php
Self Powered Sub: https://www.********/Tube-P38.aspx
Amp 1: http://www.pyleaudio.com/sku/PLMRA820 Powering 6x: http://www.kicker.com/41KM654LCW
Amp 2: http://www.kicker.com/40KXM4004 Powering 4x: http://www.kicker.com/41KM654LCW

Best regards,

tybouff,
Hello there! Asking to power that equipment for a 6 hour period without the alternator charging is a very tall order, but to do so with just one battery, it wont happen. For a constant 6 hour use you would need a large bank of batteries that is separate from your cranking battery. If only 1 or 2 batteries are all that is available you will need to start your boat and allow the batteries to charge every once in a while or have some form of charging device using sunlight, but even that wont keep up with the demand. It is the amplifiers that draw a lot of current, and will pull that battery down quickly.

These are my opinions, based on many years of experiences with audio systems in cars and even a few boats....good luck and keep us posted with what you decide.

tybouff, please remember iboats is an online retailer and avoid posting links to sites that could be competitors to the generous host of this free forum.

You will need more batteries to do that. I ran 2 JL amps powering sub, 6 in-boat speakers and 4 on tower like you. I had 2 group 24s and would drain them dead in about 5-6 hours. Changed to one large JL amp running everything now and went to 3 group 24s(one just for starting). Now can do 8 hours at full volume and still start. Look for class D amps. Pull a lot less current and don't get as hot as normal AB class amps.

You might be able to run a single 8D-AGM battery for 4 hours. However at 166#. Its not something I would want to install.

As stated, generally you need a bank of batteries. I would recommend four group 31 batteries

Thanks everybody for your time and lending your knowledge! Forums like this are what makes the world go round haha. I am truly sorry Mr. Danforth Admiral sir! I was unaware of the statute concerning posting links... just like I was unaware that I needed a type II throwable on board at the lake today X). At least iBoats doesn't hand out $200 fines like our blessed government. Thanks again gentlemen and happy boating!

It sounds like you have a very similar setup to me. Would you be kind enough to tell me the brand and type of batteries you are using (lm assuming two are deep cycle and one is cranking). Also, how are you using them e.i. Do you have a perko switch or something? I think I will end up copying your setup. What is the specific JL amp you are using? Thanks so much!!

Have 4 polk 6.5 DBs on tower and 6 in the boat. Sub is a JL 13w1v2 in a sealed fiberglass box. Amp is JL XD700/5. Have tower wired to channels 1+2 running at 2 ohms. In boats running to channel 4+5 at 1.33 ohms( yes rated to only 2 ohms but haven't had any issues). The sub runs off channel 5 at 2 ohms. For batteries, just using standard Walmart deep cycle 24s, I think they were like 80-90 a piece. Figure batteries are going to get beaten up so no need to pay high dollars. I've had this setup for over 2 years now without any issues at all. I run a Perko switch so spot 1 is for a bank(connect neg to neg and pos to pos on 2 batteries) and then spot 2 on switch is for separate starting battery. Normally i'll run on battery switch 1 and if necessary switch to 2. If just a random day, i'll leave it on switch 2 just to use the battery some. I was just out this Saturday and we beached by 10AM, stereo was on entire time and was on almost max volume from noon until about 4PM. Boat fired right up just running on the bank. So this setup would work. I've gotten many compliments that it sounds really good and is loud. Its not Wetsound $4k ridiculous but to me, those setups sound very harsh when beached and standing behind the boat. Those are good for tunes while wakeboarding only.
