1959 super seahorse 35hp rds21b...

just as i assume all outboards have, mine has the rubber seal between the removable engine cover and the lower half it mates to.

well, you can probably guess, my rubber is pretty munged up. before i go hit up my guy who sources parts for me, i was wondering if anybody here had any more "grassrootsy" or DIY ideas to use instead. perhaps some fuel line, carefully split down the middle? something else?

mods, i suppose this could go in another iboats forum, but since it IS for a johnnyrude, i thought i'd try here first.

fuel line split has been used. You can get the direct replacement though at www.nymarine.ca he is not cheap.

just a guess but id try finding some large vacume hose from the local auto parts store and buy a few feet of it split it down the middle with a sharp razor and use some contact cement to put it on and hold it in place im trying to picture it in my head and it seems vacume hose would be the best choice to try and make your own seal

bringing this one back from the dead...

thanks to you, i ordered and received the new engine cover rubber seal from peter at nymarine. looks great. now the next question,

do i glue it on, or just press-fit it on?

also, it seems like it's real latex rubber, which means it won't stand up to fuel and oil too well. hope i'm wrong about that. or else i guess i should just do my best to keep it clean.

Peter can tell you what adhesive to use...if you want to tack it down.

Another idea, is to get some seal stripping like they would use on the trunk or door of a car. It'll have to be relatively small though, but I have seen motors where this was used. You'll likely find it at a body shop.;)

3M 847 does a great job of holding the cowl seal in place.

I used this method. I bought it at an auto upholstery shop.
They called it "Pound on", I thought it was called "wind lace" but they corrected me.
It's made of vinyl rubber with a flexible steel core to help it grab. Basically "U" shaped with a spur or feather along the inside also to help it grip.
You cut it to length with tin snips and pull out the steel like staples exposed at the ends. The steel is completely enclosed so it shouldn't rust.
It's not smooth but slightly ribbed. The cover fits good and snug. I think it'll be fine.
It takes about 6 ft. I paid $1.50/ft
