I'm new to boating and have a question in regards to large bodies of water. I have an 18ft Caravalle bowrider that I'd like to take to the sounds and rivers in NC as well as some larger lakes.

I know this is to small for the ocean and wouldn't want to try even if it were possible.

I currently use it on the lakes here locally which aren't that large. Is this a good idea or am I looking for trouble due to wakes, weather and everything else that goes with large bodies of water.

Thanks.

Re: Big Water

crablegs42 - First a big welcome - lots of info here - come back often.

Now to your question - Experience, and more importantly attitude are far more important than the length of the hull. I have been safely off shore in the Gulf Stream in a 15'er and in other conditions I have turned around and put my 23'er back on the trailer shortly after launch.

Living in South Florida I read all to often read of boaters who drowned needlessly. Most are caused by errors in judgement.

Read all you can. Take a couple of courses. Limit your outings to calm days at first, know your equipment, know your own limits, keep the booze in the fridge till you get home and have fun. You'll know how far to go and when to stay home very quickly.
