Bigger boat motor?

I couldn't figure out where to put this, hope this is ok. I realize this is about motors, but it's terribly broad.

I've a 1990 bayliner capri, 18ft outboard. I'm replacing the outboard and found I can save about $1000 by swapping to a 115HP outboard rather than replace the 90HP on the boat.

My questions is if anyone knows if this boat is rated for a bigger engine. I googled around, but couldn't find anything conclusive.

Thanks!

Re: Bigger boat motor?

There should be a manufacturers plate on the hull (usually in the motor well) that will tell you what max motor size is. I think your boat will more than handle the 115.

Doesn't the boat have a capacity plate somewhere, on the transom, near the helm or???

You can always call Bayliner directly and they will be able to tell you.

Re: Bigger boat motor?

if you check on the hull plate. it will give the boats max hp.....im certain a 115 will be just fine.

at the top of the resto forum, is the uscg rules, in there you will find the max hp calculations....i think its legnth x beam and somthing or other

Ya, my capacity sticker says 90 hp, but I was hoping it was rated for more :D

Remember lawayers love boat owners who overpower their boats. It fill their pockets.

Re: Bigger boat motor?

isnt the 115 the same size/weight motor as a 90
i know the johnny/rudes are......

do you think the extra 15 horsepower is really an issue?

i know i am asking to get chewed out on this but....
legal issues aside, i dont think the boat would tell the difference.

It's really more like 25 than 15

I wouldn't do it unless (will a 90 cowling fit on a 115) :;)

Heh... I guess my question was more along the lines of will I break my transom with the increased power. If I go with the 115 I plan drop a cowling on it with the 90HP sticker... boat police are sticklers around here :D

Re: Bigger boat motor?

If Bayliner felt 115 was correct for the boat they would have indicated it.
How is it that a 115 is less than a 90.Have to wonder??
If your replacing a Force your probably adding 60 to 100 lbs and of course 25 hp.about a 30% increase. With a 30% increase in gallons per hour at wide open throttle.
