Ok, I got my problem with the crappy motor resolved, it turns out that it is pretty much garbage and would cost me much more than its worth to fix it. So, I will be getting my money back, but, I did find another 1963 bigtwin 40hp.
This one has an alternator on it, I don't know how to connect it though, can someone guide me through what I need to do?

Re: bigtwin alternator

That's a generator, not an alternator. It uses a remote voltage regulator, in a box that mounts on the transom or gunwale. At least I think they still had that setup in 1963.

If it doesn't come with the external cables and the box for the solenoid or starter, think twice. They're pretty hard to come by, and quite expensive when you can find them. If you have that stuff, then all the wiring is built-in, and connecting the battery cables will deal with charging. If you don't have that stuff, you're in for some engineering.

Re: bigtwin alternator

They changed to putting the solenoid and voltage regulator under the hood in 1967. So, yes the '63 had a junction box....it is part of the motor so if you didn't get it, you didn't get the whole motor.
