Earlier I posted re: replacement of my 30 year old fuel tanks in my 28' 1973 Fiberform cabin cruiser.

I have discovered the possible cause for my need to replace the rusty steelies...water appears to be weeping, barely perceptibly, into the area between the starboard stringer and the hull. Over time, I assume due to poor drainage, this built up and rusted out my tanks. I have looked at the plumbing nearby (the water holding tank and the hoses from the galley sink, even the head, none of which I have used in the three years I've had the boat) but haven't torn out the plumbing. There is no wet carpeting or decking near the plumbing, so it appears to be coming directly from the hull.

The drainage from the fuel compartments appeared to be pretty poor (I guess they figured since no water could get in, why worry about draining it?!). On the port side, there is no pooling water, so maybe condensation was the problem there.

I assume that if I can get adequate drainage and keep the bilge pumps healthy, this can be controlled. After all, the boat is 30 years old.

Don't all boats leak?
