Mercruiser, 3.0 Alpha one Gen II
Hi,
I used this site to troubleshoot a gear oil leak back into the bilge. Rebuilt the shaft, off and back on in short order. Thanks for all the help.
Ran the engine on the ear muffs for about 10 minutes, no problems.
Dropped it in the water and it is leaking water in through the lower end, left side looking aft, of the boat..
Can it be the bell housing to lower end gasket, and if so, what would be the best way to troubleshoot it?
Any other thoughts?

Re: Bilge oil leak

hello
check your shift cable bellows. could also be the drive bellows. the shift cable enters on the lower starboard side of the gimbal assy.
from now on use port and starboard and always refernce it as if you were behind the boat facing fwd. its an industry standard.
good luck and keep posting

Re: Bilge oil leak

Rodbolt
Thanks for the reply. I looked at the shift cable bellows and the aft end clamp was rusted and allowed the bellows to slide for/aft about 3/4 inch. Resealed with bellows glue, and reclamped it. I'll let you know when I float it tonight.
Thanks again for the assist.

Re: Bilge oil leak

Started out as a gear oil leak back into the bilge. thought it was coming past the yoke seals and replaced them.
Put it back in the water after the repair and i'm taking on water at the starboard side lower end.
Must have cut the bellows while reinstalling the outdrive. Back to the saltmines.
