Bilge pump electrical problem

I have a Rule pump with an internal float. The pump works great, but I have a problem with the 3-way electrical switch (ON-OFF-MANUAL). The auto on works and the off works, but when I switch to manual it doesn't turn on. Is the switch bad or is it the pump? Any ideas on how to test?

Thanks.

best way to check it to take a volt meter that has a ohms reading on it, connect one lead to the 12 volt wire and the other lead to the switched side of the switch. when the switch is set to manual you should have a reading of 0.0 with means no resistance and the switch is good, hope that makes sence :D

If the pump has an internal switch it won't manually come on unless there is enough water for the switch to make the pump come on.

This pump actually does work without water. Usually before I go out, I switch to manual to make sure it works. Once I hear it running, I know I'm ok. I just wasn't sure if the problem is the switch or the pump or maybe a bad wire.

Re: Bilge pump electrical problem

If thats the case, I agree with fishhunter, use the volt/ohm meter to check the switch, but make sure it is NOT connected to any power source as you may burn up the meter checking ohms. One lead will go to the line/in terminal of switch and the other to load/out of switch. With switch moved to on position, you should get a reading of 0.0 which means no resistance and the switch is good. If the switch proves to be good, then run jumpers directly from the battery to the pump to make sure the pump is still working. Hope this helps.
