Bilge Pump isn't working

Hi everyone! My husband bought a used 1995 200 Horizon at the start of the season. It has been a great boat but the bilge pump has quit working on it. This is our first boat so we are learning about it as things happen. Does anyone know where the bilge pump is located and how to fix it? It worked last weekend when we went out, but yesterday it wouldn't come on at all. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Bilge Pump isn't working

I would think we need a little more info. First of all welcome... How do you know that it isn't working? Most boats don't fill with water very fast. So if you have looked in the bilge and can see water and nothing is coming out of the bilge discharge then you do have a problem. The pumps are generally located in the lower part of the bilge. sort of in front of the motor. Some have a float switch that come on when there is water. When the motor isn't running you should be able to open the engine compartment and hear the pump running.

When we turned on the bilge pump when we took it out of the water yesterday we didn't hear the pump even try to turn on. There was very little water in there that we could see, but my husband likes to drain it out as much as possible before we leave the marina. Usually when we do this it spits a little water out the sides and you can hear it running, but nothing yesterday.

Most bilge pumps will not get all the water out of the bilge. Most of the people will take out the bilge plug at the back of the boat and drain all the water out. The bilge pump on my boat is very quiet and hard to hear. But you should be able to see it close to the center of the bilge. They are pretty inexpensive to buy and fairly easy to replace.

Check the fuse first before you change the pump. To find the pump, just follow the tubbing connected to the hru hull where the water comes out. The pump will be just infront of or under the engine. Any size pump will work as long as the outlet of the pump is the same size as the tubbing.

If you do not have an automatic switch (float) on the now, you can add on as part of the new pump.

Also, make sure your wire connections are water tight.
