Bilge pump question

I'm installing a second bilge pump on my 22' deck boat. The one thats on it is wired to a switch and doesn't have a float. Installing a float would also require a 3 way switch which wouldn't match the rest of the switches on the dash, so I figured it was easier to install a second fulley automatic pump. Not a bad idea to have two pumps anyway.

I was wondering, Can I just mount it to the bottom of the bilge with 5200, and no screws? I'd like to put as few holes in the bottom of the bilge as possible.

-Aaron

You can hook the auto to the battery with a fuse and no switch other than the auto switch, I like to use epoxy putty to hold them down--Bob

Re: Bilge pump question

Some manufacturers attach the pump to a piece of marine lumber(starboard) and then epoxy the starboard to the hull.

HeadHunt

Re: Bilge pump question

I don't know the name of the product, but instead of lumber you might want to use a plastic kind of board that they sell at West Marine (I am sure you can buy it a lot of places, it is just that I found my there).

It can be handled like wood (cut / drilled). Nice thing about it is that being a plastic is that if you put wood in the bottom of the bilge I would be worried about it rotting. Plastic might be a better fit.

My $.02

Re: Bilge pump question

You can add another bildge pump to your boat and use a switch that is a "2 way" switch that looks like the others in the dash. You want to find an "on-on" switch. Keep the switch in the automatic mode and flip it to manual when you want to turn the pump on via the dash switch. There will be no "off" position, as it is not really needed. I like laddiesservice's idea.
Careful with marine starboard. It's great stuff but most things will not stick to it well, including glue. There is a special glue for Starboard, but it is expensive.

The lumber I was talking about is called Starboard or King Starboard and yes, West Marine does sell it. You do need special epoxy like trophy said.

HeadHunt

HeadHunt,

I double checked. That is the stuff I was thinking of. I read lumber and thought wood.

Thanks

Re: Bilge pump question

If you're looking for something to mount it on, just pick-up a cheap plastic cutting board. For what you're using it for, those will be fine - I mounted my transducer bracket to one several years ago, and it still looks exactly the same. Easy to cut with a saw, holds screws (just pre-drill), and if you really want to get fancy, you can use a Dremel or a router to finish the edges!

Re: Bilge pump question

Can I just use 5200 to "glue" it to the bottom of the bilge, or do I need to screw it to something then 5200 that to the bottom of the bilge. The bilge bottom is clean and flat.

Re: Bilge pump question

Yes Aaron just glue it with whatever, don't waste time and money with a board or what ever--Bob

Re: Bilge pump question

Don't epoxy or 5200 the BP directly to the inner hull.

How are you going to remove/replace it ??? Don't worry...you'll have to. BP's are the most common failure on a boat.

Get a cutting board like Ed F. posted and 5200 that to the hull. Mount the BP with short SS screws.
