Bilge pump

Went to boat that is kept in the water and opened hatch on motor and there was alot of rain water in the bilge. The auto bilge was not working. The trim on the outdrive did not work either. I have two batt and they were switched to off. I know the pump stays powered. I thought the batteries were dead, so I put batt. switch in posistion 1 and 2 and the motor starts in both and the pump ran in both posistions. The trim also worked. After running the boat the pump worked fine as I washed the boat. I disconnected the batt. without the small wire running it and this appears to be the one that powers the pump, but I would think that the small wires are where the power comes from that are connected to the other batt. I looked in my book and do not see any diagram showing 2 batt. Thank You, RR

Re: Bilge pump

It seems as though whoever installed the bilge pump wired it incorrectly. It should be wired directly to the battery and to an auto/manual switch on the helm.

Re: Bilge pump

I'm no wiring expert but sounds like there was no ground for the pump when you had the bat switch turned off.

Re: Bilge pump

Factory installed. Never had a problem. That is why I think the little wire on the batt. is the problem when the batt. is a little low from sitting. Will check it out tomorrow. Thank You

Re: Bilge pump

I put the small wire on the other batt. and it works fine. Will check further when I have time. Maybe the one batt is not grounding correctly?
