my bilge pump wont work, where should i start looking to find the problem?

Check fuse(s). If it is an automatic one with manual switch there should be two fuses so that when battery is switched off the pump still has power.

Check the pump to see if you can manually turn the impeller. You may need to separate the pump from the base to do this. If the impeller turns hard the bearings are tight and the pump needs to be replaced. If the impeller turns easily -- then do the following checks:
1) fuse/es 2)power INTO the switch. 3) power OUT of the switch, 4) power TO the pump 5) ground wire from the pump

all the above . pop the cover and look for impeller crap, maybe a fuse ., dead pump....ect....

Not necessarily. Mine has only 1 fuse, though I can control on/off/auto with the flip of one switch. The KISS principle makes it easier to troubleshoot. - Grandad

Mine is wired with 2 fuses which is what I prefer. One is through the float switch directly to the battery so I can have my batteries switched off so my boat doesn't sink with switch off.
