Each state is different.

Here in TN. Boats don't even have a title. Every transaction is done on a bill of sale.

Call your DMV or look online.

Here is the URL for the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission site that has the information you are seeking. I found it in less than five seconds by googling "Registering a Boat in New Jersey". You could have done the same. State of New Jersey - Motor Vehicle Commission

in wisconsin a bill of sale is adviseable, but on the back of or front of the title the transfer info should be there previous owner sold to? amount of sale ect, than that is the bill of sale

Not only does it vary per state, but I've registered more than enough vehicles to know it varies depending on which person you get to help you! I've literally had nearly identical transactions a week or two apart where one clerk wanted a bill of sale, and one made no mention of it ever.

Cause they don't make phone books any more so how would you find the number, and even if you did find it they don't accept texting. Most of all its just too much bother. Yous guys answer quicker and everybody knows that if its on the internet its right.

The boat shouldn't need a bill of sale if there's a title, but the trailer, which if from NJ, won't have a 'Title' unless it weighs over 2500lbs
That will need a notarized bill of sale stating the terms of the sale, your name, the price, and date. They need to know what you paid so they can collect sales tax. The NJ title has a section on the back for this, so for the boat it shouldn't be needed. If your purchase price is too low to believe, they may insist on a bill of sale or notarized statement from the seller verifying the sale price.

For the so-called Internet enlightened, all you need is two letters followed by .gov. For example nj.gov and 3 clicks later you get oldjeeps link. You don't need YP, texting and it's much faster than asking here. It took from the 3:58 thread start until 5:16 when oldjeep posted the link. One hour and 18 minutes. It took me all of 15 seconds. BTW - HI is an oddball, Hawaii.gov.
