Hi, I'm just curious. I redone all the upholstery on my boat and have a ton of this marine vinyl left over. Is this material suitable for making a bimini top?
Absolutely, before the invention of the modern, breathable Polyester fabrics (Sunbrella and the like), vinyl was used for lots of navy tops. Navy tops are not as popular now as Bimini tops, but they serve the same function.
I doubt that your vinyl will breath much and so may tend to mildew more than other stuff if rolled up when damp. Also, it's likely heavier, perhaps doubling the bulk and weight of a rolled and stored top. Maybe working with fabric is easy for you, but for my time and effort investment, it wouldn't be worthwhile to use lesser materials just cuz I had it available. Not a job I'd like to do twice. - Grandad
