binding engine

I just bought this boat and 1983 merc 70hp o/b,3cyl, elec start engine, no power tnt..the engine has a bind in it..I took the plugs out, shot oil into cyls and turned the fly wheel by hand in both directions.. the fly wheel turns but has a terrible bind at one point, then loosens up untill it rotates to the spot of bind again ..it does rotate in both directions tho..of course I cant start the engine because of this problem... can anyone help me on this ...sure appreciate any info I can get....THANKS

It sounds like a bad upper or lower main brg, I would first remove the lower unit it can also cause the same type of binding

I agree with laddie, drop the l/u ,the bind could be as simple as a bad impeller,bit it will elimonate 1/2 the motor.

well I took the l/u off and the problem is not in the l/u...engine still has a bind with the unit off...my next adventure is to get inside the power head and check the bearings and inside out....thanks again
