Still getting my new to me Black Max up and running well. After rebuilding the entire fuel system the motor is running good but it is still running very rich right now. It is blowing through the gas and I can smell a strong gas smell while it is running as well as leaving a huge 2 stroke smoke cloud behind the boat that is probably slowly killing the kids tubing behind the boat.

At cruising speed (3800 rpm) I would estimate I am using about 10 - 12 gallons an hour.

SO I am wondering where to fine tune on the carbs. There are the little spring loaded brass screws on all six carbs and I am wondering exactly what they do? Are they idle screws or can I adjust gas/air flow a little bit with these. This is the one part of the carb that I am not familiar with (yet).

AS usual help is appreciated. Thanks to this forum I have turned a fairly sick non-working engine into a running and almost fine tuned MERC machine!

Did you rebuild the fuel pump? If the diaghram leaks, raw fuel is dumped into the crankcase, and can get burned or dumped into the water unburned.

The screws on the carbs (six in all), control the idle mixture to all carbs. if she idles well, leave them alone. Your fuel usage is a bit high. Ar the carbs flooding a bit? Are you running premixed fuel or using oil injection?

Engine is super flooded, the symptoms really seem like a stuck float or leaky needle in one or more of the carbs. I have taken apart the pump and it seemed ok but I suppose I should buy a kit for it.

I am going to re-build the fuel pump before I take the carbs apart. There is no marine mechanic around where I live so if I start messing with the carbs I won't be able to synch them. I work on all sorts of other types of engines but I am know to the marine world.

IT seems like a guy should be able to take apart the carbs and clean them and put them back together without having to do anything special but all my research has led me to believe the "link and synch" is needed after taking them apart.

Is this the case?

No link and synch is necessary, if you do not mess with the throttle arm settings, or carb throttle plate adjustments. Just a quick open up and replace floats, inlet needles and seats. See if that works for you.
