Black particles after main jet

I rebuilt the carb on my 1995 15 hp Evinrude. Every thing was clean as a whistle except the area under the metal plug near the main jet. There were a number of loose black particles between the larger outer tube and the smaller inner tube. The particles were to large to have passed through the fuel pump screen which was also clean.

Any ideas of what these could be?

I rebuilt the carb because I could not get the engine to idle. Before I took the idle mixture screw out I turned it in and it took 5 1/4 turns which seems to much. Comments?

I will reinstal the carb tomorrow and see if the problem is resolved.

Thanks in advance for your help.

That sound's like gasket shard's from an after-market carb kit. Was the shard's, and bowl gaket black in color?

Thanks for the reply. The gasket wasn't the culprit.
I plan to split the old fuel line open to see if thats where it was comming from.
I still have not reinstalled the carb so I don't know whether I have resolved the idling problem.

The fuel line wasn't the problem either. It is possible that a gasket in the fuel pump could be comming apart. Does anyone know of a reason not to install an inline filter between the fuel pump and carb.?
