Hello again this is my second post here. Like I mentinoed in my first post I am looking at taking a 1986 Johnson 9.9 motor off the hands of someone and it is really my first small outboard I have ever bought before so I need a little help. Today I placed the engine in a garbage can full of water just to be sure it would start and would remain running for a minute or so. After I did this I noticed some slight debris in the water. Im pretty sure that the garbage can I placed the motor in was clean. It was black in color there were a few small pieces in the water. The biggest they were was probably about the size of a piece of rice. The engine has been sitting for a couple years and wasnt used during that time. Any ideas of what it probably would be? If so how big of a job would it be to repair? Thanks again for the help!

What does it feel like? It could be carbon blowing out of the exhaust, or it could be parts of the impeller falling apart. The impeller would be on your list of thing to replace if you get the engine anyway. Not a big job.
What's the compression like?

I’m thinking from your description the black particles are just carbon deposits. This is not a problem. I have run my 25HP in a garbage can before and have seen the same thing. Someone else may have a different opinion.

You should have examined the particles closely. They could have been what was suggested above all the way to rat turds or pieces of wasp nest.

If it was impeller bits, they would be on the bottom of the barrel, not floating, and maybe the tell-tale would be weak or even non-existent.

Possibly exhaust carbon, or oil from the gasoil mix. If it ran sweet and the tell-tale was strong, why not put it on the boat and try it?

Thanks for the reply! I think I am going to try the motor on the boat and see how it goes.

seriosly replace the impeller before using that motor. You said it had sat for a couple of years without being run, the impeller must be replaced!

After the posts and reading a little online I think I will change the impeller!
