I'll go twelve and a half cents on that defective quarter! :D Actually I'll guess it was not manufactured that way. But who knows stranger things have happened.

Re: Black Quarter

Is it shiny where you scratched through, or is it solid black?

If is is shiny, it may have been anodized.

Marty

Re: Black Quarter

Sometimes when I am metal detecting I fine clad coins that ground mineralization has turned black. Also I have seen quarters exposed to high heat turn black.

Hmmm... Went to the US Treasury web and couldn't find anything about black quarters. Might be a fluke, Spinner, and worth something more. Have you checked with a coin dealer?

SoulWinner, did not find it in dirt and it's a 2002 year quarter, but don't know about the high heat though.

BFD, I have not checked with any as of yet.
Just came into it today.

Have you tried cleaning this quarter with some silver polish or Brasso?I'm thinking someone just acid dipped it.Maybe it is worth more than 25 cents.Never hurts to dream. ;)

Bubba.....my little friends said they will give you $5oo,999,673,877,999,254.05 for the quarter.

Seriously (really) clad coins will turn real quick if exposed to the wrong elements. like, dirt and stuff like that. But who knows. Maybe it's a fluke. Strange things happen at the mints.

Re: Black Quarter

exposure to mercury will turn a coin black real quick, right after it goes really shiny silver for a while.

The quarter do not not look like it's fully struck. Is the weight the same? Do not clean it. Take to a honest coin dealer and have it looked at. I have seen some strange errors. I own a nickel struck on a penny plachet. If you want i'll post it there tomorrow so you may see. I really think it's a error because the way it's struck . Is the back the same with the weak strike?
