Hi everyone, 2000 5.0 0M012817 Carb, Non TKS.

I had the carb rebuilt a few weeks ago.... Its been running fine, but a few days ago I was hearing a hiss from the engine, and found that the gasket on the base of the carb was sucking air. The gasket that went bad was a very thin metal covered in (whatever the black stuff is) A lot of that material was gone and thats why it was sucking air. I purchased a new gasket from M/C its about 1/4 of an inch thick ( the one that was bad was 1/16 if that). When I restarted the engine, it wouldnt idle, so I turned in the idle screw and it seemed ok. But since then it starts quickly but really smokes for maybe 3-4 min. then for the rest of the day it fires perfectly, just turn the key no throttle needed.
This am, I gave it one FULL throtle, returned to neutral and it wouldn't start until I added 1/4 throttle, then started with bleck smoke.

I have checked the choke before starting it closes all the way and opens fine. One other thing...... The single needle valve adjustment on the front does bog down the engine when turning
in, but backing it off a turn or two runs smooth, but you can still turn it out 5 or more turns and it doesn't change at all.
Any idea's??
Thanks very much......Rick

Just prior to your next from-cold start, remove the flame arrestor and have an assistant v-e-r-y slowly open the throttle all the way NOT to pump any fuel from the accelerator circuit. Shine a flashlite down the carb's throat and look for LIQUID fuel puddled in the intake. I'm suspecting excessive float level/leaking needle valve/dripping passage plugs, etc.

It doesn't matter if you go slow or fast the accelerator pump give the same amount. It's gonna be damp inside. I suspect since it runs ok after a good warm up is, the choke is set a little tight (cold). Direction you turn the housing depends on if it's a stove type or electric choke. Your needle setting range leads to believe your Mercarb needs a good soak and compressed air cleaning too.

Thanks cr 2k.... It is electric choke, so should I rotate the choke "cold" so that there is still a slight opening when closed?
Thanks again..........

There is an adjustment to limit the amount the choke closes, reducing the "over choked" condition. Manual will tell you where to start.

If you follow the manual on choke adjustment, it will be tight and always smoke like crazy for. Try this and see how it works for you.

Cold engine, Key off. move throttle to 1/4 throttle.
Loosen screws on choke coil and turn to open choke plate, then turn until choke plate just closes and tighten screws.
Now start like you normally would and see what happens.

Thanks everyone... The choke was WAY to tight, so when I moved throttle it would SLAM shut. So this am I moved throttle, and after it closed I adjusted the choke spring so that now its open maybe a quarter of an inch.... Touched the key, fired right up, no smoke!! Ambient temp here is around 72 degres.

Thanks again, Great community of people...
