Went to look at a 2000 boat wit a 5.0GL VP. It didn't start that well but ok. Once started, lots of black smoke and poor idle. It was also loud. I'm sure the exhaust bellows is shot, but would that have any other impact? What could be causing the smoke? Thanks in advance for the help.

Thanks for the come back Bond-o. I immediately thought carb too but figured the float sticking because of the hard starting but why the black smoke? What makes that happen? Also, due to the noise, I know the exhaust bellow is shot. Never did a VP. Any tricks to replacing it?

Black smoke is from an incompletey burned over-rich fuel mix.

Black smoke is comes from an overly rich condition. Unburned fuel.

Is your drive an SX drive?

Edit: I type too slow.

Do you change boats a lot? I was thinking you had a Ford engine, but when I checked that was several different boats ago. But only April.
