Howdy,

Black soot is pretty common in any exhaust, especially in a carbureted engine with an automatic choke. It'll generate a fair amount of soot (and maybe some black smoke) until the auto-choke heats up and and is fully open.

If automatic choke is fully open after a several minutes of warmup, it's running well and not using an inordinate amount of fuel, I wouldn't worry about it.

Regards,

Rick

While running on muffs until full operating temp and choke is open the soot will continue to pile up in yard along with water, for as long as i run engine

Oil level is fine. One day running boat on muffs i saw the soot just build up with the water from the exhaust in the yard. Its a very large amount of soot. The engine is definitely running rich. In trying to find out what i need to do to fix the condition and stop producing so much soot. The issue was first relized after the engine start to bog down after 30 minutes at WOT. (Rpm would drop and engine seemed to bog or stumble, seemed like it was misfiring. It only happened twice and happened after a long run across the sound at WOT) been assuming it was from running so rich. Engine fires right up when cold but has to crank longer for a hot start it. Im thinking i need a carb rebuild. Any ideas?

I've had carb issues in the past with a slow opening choke and I have to say I've never seen anything like that in the exhaust water. I used to have the Rochester Quadrajet with the divorced well type choke and these tend to open up a bit slow due to the cooler operating temps of marine engines. I had to clean the linkage and choke pivots every season to get it to open acceptably fast but still never had any discharge like that. Are you sure that its not burning oil, or that if it has power steering, there is not power steering fluid leaking in the P/S cooler? Are you getting black smoke out the exhaust after a cold start?
Is the choke opening all the way up when it reaches operating temp? At the least you may need to clean the choke make sure it opens up and set the idle mixture. You may have a sticking choke, too high float level or sticking float/defective needle valve...
