Hi People,

The coil on my Johnson 100ESL72 is looking abit sad, it was cracked and covered with Silicon.

Anyway, I have an Evinrude 85HP, according to my parts list.. The two coils have the same part number 580740.. but one is black (the newer Johnson) and the other is grey (The evinrude)

are they compatable black and grey?

whats the difference? I assumed that if they had the same part number they'd be the same.. but that doesn't appear to be the case...

The Grey one from the evinrude looks like an aftermarket replacement.. it has:
[To Fit OMC 580 740]

And its made by a company called:
Prufrex (made in Germany)
written on it.. so its probably a non genuine replacement.. so would you guys suggest that I use it instead of the cracked genuine one? (which seems to be working ok, but who knows if its 100% and not leaking abit.. though I can't see any sparks around it at night.)

Any thoughs people?

rgds

Frank

Good Morning, The coils are compatable and yes the gray coil is aftermarket but it is a QUALITY part. I use these in the repairs I have had with no trouble. Now The cracks worry me even tho they are sealed they will leak, IF i know it is there it would bother me. Hope this helps. one is OMC genuine and one is aftermarket.

Hi Mr Allan,

I'm guessing that cracked casings on the coils is something that is common to all of the old OMC outboards. .(or at least the old V4's)

Someone has basically soaked the OEM unit in silicon.. I don't know that it really is cracked, since I can't see though the silicon, but I can think of no other reason for what they have done.

Thanks for the tip, I am about to go outside and change it over now.. who knows, this might actually help it idle smoother then it has been.

thanks again.

rgds

Frank
