2004 Merc 5.0L MPI
I removed about a gallon and a half of water from the fuel tank. Then took out the fuel filter/water separator (oil filter type, without a valve at the bottom to let water out) in order to get the water out of it. Dumped the filter and put it back in. Ran the engine for about 10 minutes (sounded great) and decided to check the filter again. Took it out, dumped out the fuel (and a tiny bit of water) and put it back again. Then the engine wouldn't start. No fuel now. It had been running just fine, and after simply dumping out the filter and replacing it, I get no fuel.
The low pressure pump (between the tank and the filter) runs and fills the filter/separator back up with fuel, but you can hear the high pressure fuel pump running and trying to pump fuel, but it doesn't sound right, sounds like it's just running on air. The high pressure pump seems to be located somewhere under the exhaust riser, and seems impossible to see or reach. I got a new filter to replace the old one. Put it in and the low pressure pump filled the filter with gas, but still no fuel to the engine. Took off the filter and put a jar under the filter housing and ran the pump (turned the key to the run position without starting it) and the jar filed up. Put the filter back on and still, no fuel to the engine. High pressure pump is still just pumping air. Seems like too much air got sucked in (every time I replaced that filter, it was full of air) and now there is no fuel at that second pump.
Checked the Schrader valve up by the fuel injectors and there was almost no pressure. A little tiny bit of air came out the first time I pressed it, and there was no pressure there when running the pump (turning he key on) or when cranking the engine.
Do I need to bleed air out? How?
I cannot see or feel or even find the high pressure pump. How do I get fuel to the high pressure pump?
Help!!!!!!!
Thanks,
