Just curious. I have 2 hoses to evacuate fumes from my bilge area, but only one hose has a blower on it. Is the other hose there to draw fresh air to the bilge? i was thinking of adding another blower to evacuate bilge air to the hose with nothing on it, but then i thought it might be there to draw air in. If not, i think i will add another blower to be on the safe side.

Re: blower question

You got it right. One is an intake and one is an exhaust. The exhaust should be down low in the bilge area where it can suck out any fumes that accumulate. The exhaust hose is where the blower goes so it pulls the bilge air into the hose and blows it out.

Re: blower question

if your blower is correctly sized and functional I would not worry too much about it.

Re: blower question

It's correct. One hose to draw air in, one hose (with blower) to force air out.

Re: blower question

Many boats will have 4 hoses for the blower. Two that have a cowl facing the stern to pull air out of the bilge. One of these will have a blower on it to suck air out of the bottom of the bilge when not moving before starting and after fueling. The second hose will have no blower on it. This hose will actually suck more air out of the bilge when going down the road or running on plane out on the water. The bilge blower will also restrict air flow on the road or running fast. The hoses on this side should go to the very bottom of the bilge but not so low that they could be covered with water. They are to suck the heavier than air gas vapors out of the bilge.

Most boats will have a cowl or two facing the bow on the other side.
This side is for air intake and the hose should go high in the engine area.
The idea is to put fresh air into the engine area above the carbrator and help force any gas fumes down to the bottom where they are sucked out by the hoses low in the bilge.

Re: blower question

All 4 of my hoses are the same length. They are all low in the bilge. Should I reposition them? 2 lower and 2 higher.

Re: blower question

i've noticed that lots of newer boats have gotten rid of forward facing vents entirely. The idea is that while moving the engine is pumping far more air then the vents would draw anyway, more than enough air to ventilate the compartment.

Any hose on a cowl faceing the bow should be high in the engine area, above the carburator.
If all the cowl are faceing the stern then they should be below the engine.

The point here is to keep gas fumes from building up and to force them down in their natural heaver than air direction so the other hoses can suck them out before they get high enough in the engine area to get a spark off the engine and cause the boat to Blow UP.

By the way before starting and for sure after fueling turn the bilge blower on and go back and smell the air. If your nose detects gas fumes you need to find out the source and fix it before starting.
