Hi, Im new here and really new to boats and dont know anything about them.
I just bought a 85 4Winns with a 305 in it, motor has a cracked block, so i wanted to know if i can use a chevy car or truck engine, and what i need to do and what would be best. I really dont have the money to spend on a reman.
Thanks. Brandon

I'd also add that you need to swap over the starter, alternator, and water circulation pump to the replacement engine. They all need to be marine quality and/or certified. Check the exhaust manifolds and risors, as well. It's definitely a do-able swap. Good luck. Hy

I meant to ask, are you going to do this work yourself? If so you MUST buy the alignment tool to put the engine back in. "Close" is NOT good enough.
Thanks for your help guys, O and i am doing it mayself. I worked at a automotive shop for 2 years and worked on 305s and stuff all day, But what do you mean by alignment.

Re: Blown engine help!!!!

When you install the new engine it must be aligned with the outdrive and that takes a special tool.

(See this link: http://www.iboats.com/Engine_Alignm...7861808--**********.969566631--view_id.271231)

As I said, this really is a case where "close" just won't get it. Failure to properly align the engine WILL result in damaging the flywheel, flywheel coupling, drive shaft, u-Joints, Gimbal bearing, or all of the above.
Ok thanks again
