I took the head off of the right side of the engine and found that i had a blown head gasket. The guy i bought the boat from had been running it like that and the piston is toast and the cylinder is messed up pretty bad. Is it possible to replace the piston, hone the cylinder and use oversized rings to fix my problem? Has anyone else ever had this problem. The cylinder doesnt look really bad, just has some corrosion build up and light scoring. What are some other problems that might come up because of this and are there any other solutions to my problem. Would i be better off not throwing money on parts into it.

yes,the cylinder can be rebored oversized to accomodate a NEW PISTON KIT,no oversize rings,it must me an oversize piston, the entire powerhead assy will need to be disassembled. My advise is,totally rebuild the engine, new piston kits in each cyl.along with new berings on the connecting rods, piston kits come with new berings and new wristpin and rings, you should also change the bottom main bering along with a new seal, the center mains and top mains are usually reusable ,if the cylinders are so bad ,a new sleeve can also be installed. That said, its possible to to the 1 trouble cyl.however, not advisable, especially with the need for total disassembly.rebuilding the 1984 would also include your first believing it is worth it.if your intent is to enjoy it for some yrs,AND the rest of the engine is clean to warrent a newly rebuilt powrhead ,then its worth it.Otherwise ,a good used eng may be the better idea.the 150 is a great engine, also in a rebuild, the carbs should be rebuilt as well,a lean condition, caused by a bad carb ,can distroy a piston
