I'm pricing a new after-market unit, a re-build, and one company offers "new brand name units."

How can they stock "new" Evinrude lower units that are 11 years old?

Any input on "new after market units?" Reliability? Quality? These are copy's made by a third party and I have no experience with them.

Am I missing another option?

Thanks in advance,

What about a good used lower.Probably 1/3 the cost.
Those lowers interchange over several year models. I bought a used lower for my 81 model V-6,i think it was from an early 90's motor.
Dhadley or one of the pros could tell you what years will work.
I bet a new one is about 1200 bucks,i gave 400 for mine and it had been re sealed and works fine.Just a thought to save you some money...;)

I've thought of looking for a salvaged unit and rebuilding it. That should definitely be another option if I can find one in good condition.

Thanks,

I have found several on Ebay before.I ended up getting lucky and got one from a guy i know in Long Island NY.
I had called some local marinas and they wanted a fortune for one.
Good luck!

Wow! Thanks Gary. Its worth a try considering its 1/8th the price of "new."

If you do buy a used one make sure the shaft length and the shift rod is the same.We need one of the guys to tell you exactly what years will work.
I know the v-6 lowers were the same over a long period of time.
300 to 400 bucks is much better than 1700 or more:eek:

Good point. I'll put out a new thread for interchangeable years.

Re: Blown lower unit-96' 200 Ocean Pro

its just to easy to rebuild a v6 JE unit if the case and shafting is ok. have the case checked for warpage with the fixture and the pinion shimming done by a dealer, the rest is achievable with no real special tooling and can be done by the average do it your selfer.
gear sets can be had for around 400 or so and a seal kit is another 60 or so but when done you know it all fits :).

Re: Blown lower unit-96' 200 Ocean Pro

rod,

Thanks for the reply but I should have explained that the case is ruined. I noticed a slow oil leak on the side--a closer inspection uncovered a slight bulge on both sides of the case near the 90 degree turn with a small crack on the right.

When I checked the oil, there was plenty of metal on the magnet and a milky color to it. I change the oil regularly and have had no problems until now. Only thing I can remember is hitting something a while back hard enough to dent a new ss prop. Skinny water around my inlet. I'm not sure if this was what caused the problem...just a guess.

Just be careful, in 1994 I believe there was a driveshaft change that increased or decreased the length by 3/16" and removed the oring groove. Using the long shaft unit on a shortshaft motor causes excessive strain on the top main bearing and premature failure. I can attest to that first hand. Use the brp parts list to determine which shaft years are compatable.
Good luck
