Thoughts on this? ? I run a 1996 Grady White 272 with a pair of 200 Ocean Pro?s. About two weeks ago I broke a shaft on the right engines lower unit. While I was having this fixed I had them replace a VRO pump on the left engine due to a persistent fuel leak and it being the old style pump. Got the boat back and made it about 10 miles when I blew the power head on the left engine. ? See photos attached. Coincidence? Fixed at a BRP shop they say it has nothing to do with the new pump. I trust them, they seem to know what they are doing, it?s just frustrating. If I post the part number for the new pump can anyone cross reference it for me? It?s not the part number BRP shows for that unit.

Thanks

Re: Blown Ocean pro 200

ouch.

go ahead and post the pump number, I don't know how to look it up but someone will know if its the correct pump or not.
But you didn't post the engine yr or model number so no-one could look it up if they wanted to.

What does the dealer say caused the melted piston?

Typical cause is a clogged carb or injector.(ficht)
or a failed water pump....clogged cooling system, thermos etc.
or... yeh faulty OMS (VRO)

It's not likey the new pump had anything to do with it as long as it was hooked up right. Usually a hole in the center of the piston has more to do with an abnormal spark event.

What spark plugs are you using? (check to make sure they put the right ones in)

Sorry about the delay - Motors are 1996 Ocean Pro 200's the one in question happens to be the counter rotator.

shop says detonation from carbon buildup or a timeing issue.

not at the motor so will post plug numbers to follow

New pump part # 5007420

Thanks

Re: Blown Ocean pro 200

Pump part number is right. Not likely the pump, as it cannot single out one cylinder, and the others look fine from your pics.
Possibly a piece of junk dislodged from inside the fuel line when replacing the fuel pump, and settled in the #2 carb, causing a lean running engine.
Pull the #2 carb, remove the fuel bowl, and look for foreign matter. Look at the HS jet also. Plugs are right too.

Where you located, by the way?
