Boat Bogs Down and Dies when taking it above idle in gear

I have a 92 Glastron with a 4.3 alpha one gen 2. We started on the lake this weekend without a problem. But through out the weekend I was having a problem with getting the boat above idle. I can rev it up in neutral just fine and idle around the marina just fine but as soon as i take it above idle it will bog down and die. When It started I could let the engine clear itself and then go, but as the weekend went on it would took 8-10 times of the boat dying before i could finally get it to go. The boat is obviously running rich due to the raw gas smell from the exhaust.

The same weekend I blew a small hole in my y pipe from a failed shutter. Would this be the root cause or should I be looking at my carb as well. I plan on pulling the motor this weekend to deal with the y-pipe and plan on checking out the plugs since it appears i can't pull them without pulling the manifolds although i have dug that deep into it. If it is a carb problem can I get some direction in identifying my carb and a manual to overhaul it and adjust it.

Thanks everyone for the help, this is my first boat and without this site i would have got rid of it a long time ago lol.

Sounds like a carb problem. Did you try tapping on the area near the needle valve? it may be sticking open Although if it idles fine I would lean more towards starvation. Either case the first thing you need to do is check your filter/s and maybe disconnect the fuel line at the carb and (holding the line in an open container pull the coil wire so it won't start) crank the engine and see if you are getting fuel.

Then look down the carb (engine off) and have someone pump the throttle a few times and make sure you are getting flow from the accelerator pump. If not carb rebuild time.

I'll check that out before I rip the motor out. Does anyone know where I can get the float measurements. I still think It's a rich condition by the exhaust and raw gas smell from it. But who knows when the PO changed the filter

Had a similar situation later year on my 140. Exhaust manifold water jackets cracked and was stifling the whole engine. Sounded like detonation but not the case at all. -good luck
