Time for my first post here.... Background on my boat, been in my family for about 12 years, hadn't run for 7 years (till this weekend). It's a 1969 Duo x15 with a Chrysler 45 horse outboard.

Took it out this weekend, ran pretty solid for about 20 minutes, until I stopped on the lake (my buddies hat flew off) and when I put it in neutral, it died. Well I couldn't get it to start so I was getting towed in, while i was waiting to dock, I pulled the cover off and opened the throttle a bit, had my buddy hit the starter and it fired right back up. It would only run from that point on if I held the throttle a little open or if we were in gear and the throttle was obviously open anyway...

Couple guys I know think its being choked out... what are the opinions around here?

You need to do some work. If you haven't already.

Pull the carb off. Disasemble and clean. Use small wires to get into the passages.
replace the Needle and seat and bowl gasket at minimum.

Time for a new set of spark plugs. Try again.
You could be dealing with a bad fuel pump.

You didn't say what year of the chrysler 45. Points ignition? May need to clean and regap.
Also lets drain the lower unit oil and fill back up.. (dont unscrew the pivit pin)

Carbs have been cleaned, plugs replaced, and lower unit flushed and filled... The person I got the boat from seems to think there was an issue with the ignition switch wiring, I used the manual to wire it 'correctly' but I'm less than confident that its right... The motor is a 69, with points ignition, haven't been able to get the flywheel off to check the points...
